Californians’ ‘glamping’ business accused of exploiting Hawaii

A luxurious “glamping” business is stirring up controversy in Hawaii’s silent Waimanalo group, Hawaii News Now claimed.  

The outlet says that Glamping Hawaii, which provides a “higher-close camping and occasion working experience,” has been accused of illegally propping up tents just yards absent from homeless families in the county seashore park. This controversy comes just soon after Monthly bill 38 was signed into law, which prohibits most business actions like weddings and image shoots from Waimanalo to Makapuu. Now, the corporation — which is also operate by a team of Californians who recently moved to Hawaii — is reportedly beneath investigation by the town of Honolulu. 

“This was not just a camping outfit. This was glamping in its whole hewa resource. I mean, it was a bar, a tall bar, established up with bar stools,” Waimanalo Community Board Member Kapua Medeiros informed the outlet.  

In accordance to their web page, Glamping Hawaii features extravagant tent offers that can be outfitted with 5-foot-tall teak kitchens, hearth pits, and bars for excess costs. While they really don’t checklist bundle rates, Hawaii Information Now states they price “several hundred dollars” per evening. 

Company reps told the outlet they did not imagine they were being violating the regulation, stating that patrons are liable for obtaining tenting permits. On the other hand, Hawaii Information Now says this might also be illegal as permits are not transferable. 


Emma Koa, a Waimanalo native and business owner, informed the outlet that she confronted the enterprise homeowners in person and accused them of peddling a “romanticized” variation of Hawaii to travelers. (On the other hand, firm associates advised the outlet that 70{6932ee47e64f4ce8eedbbd5224581f6531cba18a35225771c06e4f1b3f0d9667} of their consumers are locals.) 

“We do not have to have much more people today prostituting and exploiting Hawaii and her individuals and her aina, and the entire paradise depiction of Hawaii,” Koa informed the outlet. 

“Folks fork out to appear and exploit Hawaii and have an authentic Hawaiian knowledge,” she carries on in a recorded video, zooming in on the glampsite. “Meanwhile, right there is the genuine Hawaiian encounter,” she states, panning to the homeless encampment. “That’s uncomfortable.”

A single Yelp person, Keks Manera5, left a a single-star overview admonishing the company’s actions. ” … This is this kind of a slap in the confront to Indigenous Hawaiians/kanaka Maoli and the local generations that been here for decades who are having difficulties to endure and get by. … Hawaiʻi is so more than the greed and exploitation of the islands. PACK IT ALL UP …”

“This is not an attack on commercial action, but it is a warning, a shoutout to all enterprise owners who are working on our parks and shorelines that you are not welcome here. And we handed a law to cement that,” Waimanalo Community Board Member Kapua Medeiros explained to Hawaii News Now. 

Glamping Hawaii did not reply to SFGATE’s ask for for comment at the time this article was published.
